holy shit. that looks ……… dire. like some kind of 80s B-movie. even without seeing it in motion or hearing any of the sound. Masters of the Universe, anyone?
for a start … and this is an epic mistake on a par with getting prime and bumblebee as the wrong vehicles/colours in transformers, or setting Akira in New Manhattan - Piccolo should be GREEN. He’s a freakin’ alien dude. Marsters looks like he’s getting into the role, but it’s still hammy. and the wrong colour.
Whoever that guy playing Goku is, it looks like he’ll give it a good crack, but he could have done with longer hair and an even more vacant expression

Why is it that these characters don’t even seem to have any muscle definition? Don’t they train in chambers with increased gravity? Surely Goku/Gohan (can’t tell who it’s supposed to be) would at the very least have a ripple on his dominant forearm (should be self explanatory).
Where are Piccolo’s antennas, and why does he look like a bad “Buffy” vampire? And why isn’t he GREEN!?

Making live action anime is always a bad idea. Espcially when done in the U.S. If you’re not going to do it right, why bother doing it all? Just because there are anime fans doesn’t mean they’ll flock to every single movie made.

Actually, it does not look all that bad. All the fanboys screaming about “it’s not an exact copy of the show I know” need to realize that it’s NOT THE SHOW. If you want an exact copy, just go watch your show.
It’s about taking the story and applying it to the big screen in a motion picture setting. Some things just wont translate to it very well. Green skin won’t look good on the screen. Same reason Wolverine didn’t get yellow spandex for the X-Men movies.
While I’m fairly sure the movie will suck, it’s still too early to tell how badly.

Not to sound pretentious in the face of pretentiousness, but there’s a difference between adjusting characters for a movie, and outright taking away the defining traits of a character.
Taking away his green skin and antenna, which would look fine in a movie, is comparable to having a version of the joker with brown skin and red hair. It defeats the purpose of the movie: To attract the fans who are the few who would actually watch this movie.

Agreed… It should’ve been done by the Japanese.. Americanization ALWAYS screws things up.. take a look at the Hokuto No Ken Live Action Movie (Fist of the North Star). It was HORRIBLE. Dragonball didn’t need a live action movie..I would like to see another anime though.

Apparently hollywood doesn’t understand that it is possible to make characters look how they are supposed to. Anyone who does NOT want the characters to look ‘right’, or care that they look ‘right’, obviously is not a real fan. What if superman wore green just because some idiot movie maker thought it would be an artistic change?
Check out just a few of these images below. If these cosplay people w/ little or no budget can get the look right, why can’t Hollywood?! Yes these costumes are somewhat crappy, but seeing as Hollywood does have some money to spend on making them good, just put the right actor in one of them, and you would be set. Also, notice KRILLIN can be pulled off successfully. Yes he has a nose but even I can live w/ that.

While it may not look like your cartoon (well, it IS a cartoon, how many cosplayers can you say look exactly like their characters? none!) Give Marsters a chance.
He’s an amazing person, highly intellectual, and damn good on screen in any role he’s had. Before you say it sucks, give him a chance to drag it back up out of the drain because I think he’ll rock everyones socks.

Ya the movie is looking worse and worse after every picture that comes out! My biggest complaint here is Chow-yun Fat, what is he wearing, why isn’t he bald, and where are the sunglasses? Piccolo seems like he might be ok with that new futuristic biker black suit, I dunno, but he dosen’t look as fake and lame as goku or roshi thats for sure, I’ll give him that.

Exactly! Americans just don’t know how to pull of anime campiness. They are taking themselves way too seriously for some parts of the aesthetic, and also not taking themselves seriously enough for other parts of the aesthetic.
That they cast a teenage American for an Asian pre-teen is just stupid. And then that they tried to give him anime hair, but held back from outrageousness is mind-blowingly stupid. Either go for broke with HUGE hair, or make it totally reasonable and normal.
The Asian girls that they are casting look like American women anyways.
Americanizing an idea like this was a huge mistake. I don’t think they needed to be entirely faithful to the original, but they didn’t have to try and make it American.

This isn’t even going to be Dragon Ball they’ve changed way too much of the story line from the show to the movie. I know your supposed to make changes but having Goku going to school when he didn’t go and having Grandpa Gohan still alive during King Piccolo. To me Justin Chatwin looks like a complete wuss in the shots. Where’s the muscle didn’t they require him to be on some sort of work out plan?? I think this is going to be a big flop and it’s sad cause the whole Dragon Ball series and the two series that come after are great.

About the muscles, goku didnt get ripped until like the frieza saga, he didnt have well defined muscles in db or the saiyan saga either. and about piccolo, hes supposed to be an alien, that doesnt mean he has to be a crazy green alien, cuz nobody would see that. Well, they’ve finally turned it into a live-action movie with a few known actors. I can’t find any trailers for it, only screenshots, so I won’t be rating this movie at all yet. It could suck, it could be fairly good. James Wong is directing it, and based on other movies/tv shows he was the writer and/or producer for, this actually might turn out fairly well. Look at the story line and actual trailers before you bash a movie because of photos.
Oh, and just to clear up previous comments about James Marsters looking like a vampire from Buffy, it’s because he WAS a vampire in Buffy.

For all you douche bags that said the characters are meant to be asian - think again. Goku was a saiyan, he wasn’t even from earth - I have never heard of an asian saiyan. I suppose Piccolo is asian too? If you ever had any artistic talent you would know that japanese animé drawings cast european/ american characters with larger than life eyes - thats how they draw us. Also …. THIS IS NOT A DRAGONBALL Z MOVIE - King Piccolo is different to Piccolo in DBZ!!! Yes they have done thier research and no you don’t know eveything about the series. If you want to see an exact copy of the anime - GO WATCH THE ANIME!!! Nice jobs to those few people out there who don’t actually base their entire opinion on a few pics. This movie might be shit or it might be awesome, wait til you at least see the preview and not butt plug the movie before it has a chance to get some ground. FUJI is right, if you want to see an exact replica go watch the anime, how childish do you think the movie would be to have talking animals, and cartoon just don’t translate exactly to live action the way it may in all you heads, especially 100 hours all compressed into 90 minutes.

Come on guys. This movie isn’t going to be that bad. There’s no way Hollywood can make everything look the same compared to the cartoon. But at least they set Dragon Ball up to one hell of a director.
Read the interviews. Chow is using a shit load of symbolism in this movie. All of you should go watch this movie and look at the soul of this movie rather then Piccolos not so green skin.

blockbuster of 2007 and the best movie ive ever seen and what to all those punks complaining about it they went to see it and then they begged bay for a sequel so how abot every body shut and give dragonball a chance i agree it does look kinda 80s but still the budget is over 100 million wich means it will probaly makeup for it with insane special effects and fight scenes and will you people shut up wiyh the complainin cuase u know ur all gonna see it

This was not meant to be a clone of the show. If it was, there’d be no point in watching this. You’d just go watch the show. This is suppose to make the show look more realistic, and just think about it. A lot of things in that show was just so darn unrealistic. Yes, Piccolo looks more like Garlic than Piccolo. Yes, the American kid as Goku does look rather silly. But isn’t Goku silly looking anyway? And remember, Goku wasn’t Japanese. He was a Saiyan. So who’s to say all Saiyans look Japanese?? Frankly, I think the kid will do well. He’s definately got the goofy look. Also, the Japanese already tried making a live-action Dragonball movie…. and failed miserably. Frankly, I’m looking forward to this, and I’d definately pay $10 to see it in theaters, knowing that it could very well be the worse thing ever… but I won’t know until I watch it.

few things I want to say
I can understand not having the same hair color or the exact hairstyle. some of the hair on the show are hard to pull of in real life. I can ignore not having the second biggest character from dragon ball (krillin) on the show (it is as if they never read the manga). I can also ignore the fact that they picked the cast out of famous people instead of people who looked more right for the part. goku is not muscular enough. Only reason he looked smaller on dragonball then dbz is because of drawing quality. also the tight clothing of goku is gay. he always wears his fighting clothes. only similarity with master roshi is the shirt. they could have just gotten someone short but not a midget for krillin if they wanted to. that would of been cool. Also master roshi and goku never trained martial arts, (if they read the book they would know) they did weight training with turtle shells and sprints. they had already learn martial arts by themselves before meeting him. Also goku never trained with master roshi anymore by that time. he trained on korins tower. piccolos ears are missing, his clothing look like something out of star trek (not king piccolo clothing at all), and he isn’t green(everything could have been ignored with piccolo if you didn’t f*cked this one up). Well there are some other stuff but these are the biggest problems that pop up. hopefully they didn’t make the energy blasts invisible or to transparent.

King piccolo looked like piccolo but older. he was green, he had antennas, and his clothing did not come out of the chronicles of riddick. He pretty much looked like kami. So please don’t say anything if you do not know your facts.

Is this a site overrun by Fox employees?
If not, I cannot understand why would anybody make up so many excuses for a movie that is just wrongness by existing.
Like, everybody just watched the trailers and made up their minds to boycott this, so unless Fox is paying them I cannot think of a reason why they would waste so much time futilely trying to fool the masses into thinking the movie’s going to be at least watchable.

If you actually watched the series at all you would know that. If you pay attention, there are scenes in the dragon ball and the Z series that show clearly Asian characters. They look completely different then goku and the rest of the sayians. Also, you would not be comparing this piccolo to a vampire if you didnt know who was playing the character. The fact that it is the guy who played a vampire on the Buffy series is influencing your mind. Actually, the pictures look a little like he has a tint of green. Of course he isnt going to be completely green, or else he WOULD look like the mask. And as stated earlier by many, this is a MOVIE, not an anime. Its based on an anime. But you cannot copy everything. I suppose you want single fights to last several movies also?

I didn’t hold out much hope after seeing who was cast for what. DBZ was my first true anime obsession so I’m picky.
To me two things can ruin a movie before it begins.
A) Casting. If you f up casting, there is NO hope for a movie no matter what you try to say.
B) How dedicated the directors/producers/team are to staying true to the genre/original premise of the movie.
There are plenty of ways Producers can put in their own signature and still have the movie come out visually awesome.
If we learned anything from the creators of such books/graphic novel/cartoon/ect to live action productions such as Lord of the Rings or 300… it’s stick to what the F-ing creator gave you.
DBZ is a fantastic anime without having idiots mess it up with shitty casting and cheesy changes to the storyline.
I’ve wanted DBZ to be live action for ages, but now i’m just utterly disappointed.
There’s a slew of other’s I’d like to see as well:
Gundam Wing
Johnny Quest
Inuyasha
Ghost in a Shell (which is being made btw!)
Gargoyles
Avatar (again being made, but I’m getting nervous at the lack of updates)

But DBZ was at the very top of my list.
Seeing this just makes me want to sign a petition that assures that no Animated show EVER gets turned into a live action unless certain directors do it!!!

This movie can no longer be called “dragonball’. It is Nothing like the original. Absolutely manipulated Characters, story lines, and imagery. Im gonna cry when this comes out.

Wait for the movie to come out and suck to actually cry, like I did when I saw Hellboy II. It’s not bad to be a bit of a nerd. But when you’re so nerdy you get ticked off cause a character looks off is just plain pathetic.
Look for REAL flaws, like off-character lines or actions.
